Most people looking for a van in the UK, either for commercial or personal use, often struggle with whether they should purchase or lease the vehicle. Both the cases have their own pros and cons that should be thoroughly analyzed to make the right decision.

In this article, we’ll discuss the advantages and disadvantages of buying vs. leasing a van to help you decide-

Buying a Van

Pros

1.  You Own the Van

The biggest advantage of buying a van is the ownership it comes with. Unlike leasing where you’re basically renting the van for a specified period, buying gives you ownership of the vehicle.

Even if you purchase the van through a loan, every monthly payment will get you closer to own a vehicle. Once the loan is fully repaid, you’ll be the rightful owner of the van. So, the purchased van is yours to keep and can be a valuable addition to your personal or business assets.

2.  Freedom to Customize the Van

When you’re the owner of the van, you have complete freedom to customize it the way you like. This is especially useful when you need the van for commercial use as you can customize it according to the preferences and specific needs of your business.

Be it adding some specialized equipment, interior modifications, or branding, ownership provides complete flexibility to tailor the van as per your requirements.

3.  Zero Mileage Restrictions

When you take the van on lease, the lease contract will feature a fixed mileage for which you can use the vehicle during the lease period. Go beyond the mileage limit and you’ll be required to pay an additional fee depending on the extra miles. But with ownership, there are no such mileage restrictions.

You have complete freedom to use the van as much as required without worrying about any mileage limitations or extra costs.

4.  No Other Extra Charges

Lease agreements also generally come with a host of other restrictions, which if you’re not fully aware of, could lead to significant expenses. For instance, if you’d like to terminate the lease before the decided lease period, you’ll have to pay a penalty fee.

There are other restrictions related to excessive wear, maintenance, etc., that could make the entire process of leasing more expensive. But you don’t have to worry about these restrictions or penalties if you own the van.

5.  Cost Savings Over Time

While the initial upfront cost of buying a van is higher than leasing, ownership can result in significant cost savings over time. Once the loan is fully repaid, you no longer have to worry about any monthly payments.

On the other hand, if you’re leasing the van, there will be an ongoing monthly payment as long as you use the vehicle.

Cons

1.  Higher Upfront Payment

One of the most significant reasons why many people prefer leasing a van is the higher upfront cost of purchasing. In the UK, you’re required to pay at least 10% of the van cost as a down payment when buying it through a loan. The down payment could be as high as 30% in some cases depending on loan eligibility.

For most people with limited capital, this higher upfront cost is a significant barrier. In comparison, leasing is considerably cheaper.

2.  Maintenance Costs

When you’re the owner, you’re fully responsible for anything and everything that goes wrong with the vehicle. Apart from the routine maintenance costs, there can also be expensive unexpected repairs as the van ages.

Irrespective of whether you’re using the van for commercial or personal use, these repair costs can put a considerable dent in your finances.

3.  Higher Insurance Costs

While you’ll have to pay for insurance irrespective of whether you’re buying or leasing the van, the premiums are generally higher with ownership. The owner is completely responsible for comprehensive coverage and potential liability of the vehicle.

Depending on the usage, make, and model of the van, the insurance premiums could be a significant ongoing cost with van ownership.

4.  Long-Term Commitment

As a van owner, you’ll commit yourself to the same vehicle for several years. In most cases, you’ll be using the vehicle for at least 5-7 years. But what if during this period, the transportation needs of your business start to change? Or what if you’d like to upgrade to a newer van with improved features?

You’ll then have to get into the time and effort-consuming process of selling the existing van and then purchasing a new one. In most cases, buyers are unable to recover the initial investment of the existing van.

5.  Van Depreciation

Another significant downside of buying a van is depreciation. With time, the market price of your van will fall due to depreciation. This will impact the resale value of the vehicle.

It is generally said that vehicles lose at least 15%-30% of their market price in the very first year. From the second year onwards, it continues to lose 10%-15% of its value every year on average.

Leasing a Van

Pros

1.  Lower Initial Deposit and Monthly Payments

If you’re concerned about the high down payment of purchasing a brand-new van, leasing can be a better option. Apart from the down payment itself, even the monthly payments of a lease are considerably lower than monthly loan installments.

The affordability of van leasing makes it a preferred choice for many people who want to acquire a van for personal or commercial use in the UK.

2.  Access to Newer Van Models

As discussed above, van buying requires you to commit yourself to a single model for many years. But with leasing, you can drive newer models with the latest features and technologies without the long-term ownership commitment.

This can be highly beneficial for businesses that abundantly rely on their van fleet for their day-to-day operations and want to maintain a reliable and modern fleet.

3.  Switch or Purchase the Van

Most lease agreements allow you to either return the van or purchase it at the end of the lease. If you’d like to upgrade to a newer model, you can do so once the lease ends. Alternatively, if the van has become a critical part of your daily operations, you also have the option to buy it.

The flexibility to upgrade to a new van or purchase the leased van is another reason that makes leasing an excellent choice, especially for commercial applications.

4.  Lower Repair Costs

When you lease a van, it is generally covered under the manufacturer’s warranty throughout the lease period. In other words, you can avoid significant repair costs if you maintain the vehicle as per the terms and conditions mentioned in the lease agreement.

Moreover, many van leasing companies offer a variety of add-ons like maintenance packages, roadside assistance, and more to offer enhanced convenience.

5.  Tax Benefits

Leasing a van in the UK for commercial use can also offer a variety of tax benefits. For instance, businesses generally claim back a certain portion of VAT applicable on lease payments and deduct these payments as a business expense.

The tax benefits can offer considerable savings and enable companies to improve their bottom line.

Cons

1.  You Don’t Own the Vehicle

The biggest drawback of van leasing is the lack of ownership. Unlike loan installments where each installment increases your equity in the van, monthly lease payments only contribute to van usage. Once the lease ends, you have to return the vehicle or enter into a new lease.

On the other hand, if you purchase the van through a loan, you become the owner once you fully repay the loan amount.

2.  Mileage Restrictions

Another significant disadvantage of van leasing in the UK is the mileage restriction. If you exceed the mileage limit mentioned in the lease agreement, you’ll have to pay a penalty. And it is not always easy to know how many miles your van will be driven in a year when signing the lease agreement.

When you purchase the van, there are no such restrictions and you’re free to drive the van for as many miles as you want.

3.  Wear and Tear Penalty

While lease agreements generally allow for normal wear and tear, you can be penalized for any damage that is beyond normal. If you don’t maintain the van as per the provisions of the lease agreement, the penalty can be steep in certain cases.

Thus, if you go ahead with a van lease, ensure that you also purchase the add-on maintenance package or insurance offered by the lease provider.

4.  Long-Term Cost

While the monthly lease payments are lower than loan installments, they’ll still amount to a significant sum in the long run. In many cases, the lease amount you pay over the years could be higher than the cost of purchasing the same vehicle.

So, if you’ll be using the van for several years and don’t mind the long-term commitment to a vehicle, buying can be a more cost-effective option.

5.  Limited Customization Options

Leasing agreements generally have restrictions on van customization. While they might allow you to make minor changes to the vehicle, significant customizations are generally not allowed. In a way, this restricts your ability to personalize the vehicle as per your requirements.

Needless to say, if you purchase the van, you have complete freedom to customize the van the way you want.

Should You Buy or Lease a Van?

As you can see there are several pros and cons of buying vs. leasing a van in the UK. The selection between the two should ultimately depend on your specific needs and finances.

While ownership comes with equity build-up, customization freedom, and unlimited mileage, the higher initial cost can be a major deterrent. On the other hand, leasing offers benefits like lower upfront and monthly costs and access to newer models but it also comes with mileage restrictions, customization limitations, and no ownership.

Ford’s trusty stalwart, the Transit Custom, is a must for many businesses across the nation. It has evolved over the years and its foray into electric vehicles is further evidence of this.

Electric vehicles are slowly gaining in popularity with van owners across the UK, for varying reasons. For some it’s because of their potential to save precious pounds in fuel spend. Others are attracted to their reduced negative impact on the environment, the ability to attract more green-conscious customers to their business, their relatively quiet engines, or any combination of the above.

Their appeal may only grow in future given the energy crisis facing the country.

Unpredictable petrol and diesel supply, and volatile fuel prices are a serious concern for consumers and businesses. So too is the legislation banning the sale of new conventional petrol/diesel vehicles in the UK as of 2030.

For many people, going fully electric is daunting, with their power, and range in question. This is where the many advantages of a hybrid vehicle may come into play (This extends to chiller and freezer vans, but more on that later).

Back to Ford Transit Custom

Ford’s Transit Custom 2.0L EcoBlue 130ps (with a diesel engine) is built to improve fuel efficiency, thereby cutting running costs, and reduces carbon emissions into the atmosphere.

This van is available in manual or automatic transmission, with various wheelbase, roof height and trim options available. Gross vehicle weights range from 2600kg to 3400kg and payloads from around 700kg to 1 500kg. Air-conditioning is optional.

Fuel is saved due to reduced load on the diesel engine and an enhanced auto start-stop function, which works even when the van has halted but is still in-gear, or it’s decelerating under 12km/h.

Best of all, as it’s a hybrid engine, it does not need to be charged. When the driver hits the brakes or decelerates, energy is captured and stored in a 48V 10Ah lithium-ion battery pack. Ford says the “electrical machine provides torque assistance to the diesel engine and drives electrical ancillaries”.

For the environmentally-conscious, besides the obvious reduced carbon emissions, the diesel engines have an AdBlue tank fitted, which cuts down nitrogen oxide particulate emissions.

So that’s the basic hybrid van. Here’s how it would be customized to be a chiller or freezer:

Transit Custom Chillers

A chiller van is used to move perishable goods needing to be kept at medium temperature ranges, such as beverages, bread, cold meat, flowers, and certain pharmaceutical products, among others, usually over short distances. These goods need to be chilled, but not frozen, at a range of 0°C to 8°C to preserve their quality and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria.

To customize a Ford Transit Custom into a chiller van, customize your vehicle to meet the requirements of the Chill Specifications and you will get Direct Drive refrigeration unit installed (GAH RC300). is fitted, with at least 50mm insulation and Paneltex Somers chiller door mouldings. Insulation may include polystyrene foam or Styrofoam for example.

Transit Custom Freezers

For goods that need to be kept frozen and have the option to travel greater distances, a transit custom freezer van is required. These vans carry low-temperature goods such as ice-cream and frozen food at a range of -18°C to -25°C.

Depending on temperature needs, transit custom freezer vans will have varying insulation thicknesses up to 100mm, freezer units reaching varying temperatures up to -25°C and even reinforced, heat-resistant sides and doors. It may also include features that enable quick defrosting.

To customize a Ford Transit Custom into a freezer unit, get your vehicle customized in accordance with Freezer Specification where Direct Drive refrigeration unit would be fitted (GAH SRF350), along with a patented direct air system that boosts both miles per gallon and the fridge unit’s efficiency. At least 75mm insulation is added to the van; with thermal efficient composite construction; seamless, durable glass reinforced plastic lining; and Paneltex freezer-door mouldings.

Freezer vans can be adapted to have several loading compartments, with different temperature settings, enabling different goods to be transported simultaneously.

Improved insulation and having rear pod doors can add further energy efficiency to the freezer and chiller vans.

Make it your own

You can then also kit out your Transit Custom with any of the six trim options, including Leader, Trend, Limited, Trail, Active, and Sport.

For van owners who really want to stand out from the crowd or have added comfort for their drivers, their vans can be customised further with standalone extras (think interiors like carpeting, and more), or Swiss Vans’ upgrade styling packs, which include: WASP, WASP ICE, Hornet, or Super Hornet. These packs may include 18″ and 20″ alloys wheels in various styles, sidebars, front splitters, rear spoilers, sidebars, roof styling rails and even interior leather, depending on the pack you choose.

Ford’s trusty stalwart, the Transit Custom, is a must for many businesses across the nation.

New Ford Transit Custom Trail and Active

The Ford Transit family had the third-highest selling electric vehicles last year. Ford has prioritised keeping their supply of electric vans up, since the restrictions from the pandemic have lifted, to cater to the increasing demand from businesses and others looking to go out on adventures. Another big reason for Ford’s popularity is the demand for eco-friendly, go anywhere capability, which they have answered. Over the last few years, Ford has expanded the type of hybrid Transit customs to include off-road capability like none other with the New Ford Transit Custom Trail and Transit Custom Active. Today we’re going to go over the reasons these two amazing electric vans are making such a bang on the market in the last few years, and even more so today.

New Ford Transit Custom Trail

See the power before turning the key

With black detailing and the famous big Ford grille in a matt grey honeycomb pattern. The New Ford Transit Custom Trail offers the same tough look on the outside as the power under it has under the hood. Boasting 16″ black alloy wheels and a wider body. The Custom Trail is offered in two heights and two different lengths, plus a five-seater double cab in-van option — also available with two lengths to choose from. Black cladding on the lower section of the front bumper, across the wheel arches, and through the sills add to the tough look.

Power beyond looks

The 2023 Trail comes with a 3.5-litre Ecoboost V6 diesel engine that produces 310 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft of torque. It’s built for power and control. An added dual AGM batteries and extended fuel range have improved fuel efficiency in this van.

Go anywhere traction and control

A ten-speed automatic transmission with Ford’s Intelligent ALL-WHEEL drive system complements the improved traction of the tires. As you drive, you can choose from five driving modes – normal, Eco, mud or ruts, tow or haul, and slippery – to keep you moving no matter what your terrain is like.

Storage, towability, and interior function galore

The New Ford Transit Custom Trail with its high-roof, extended configuration provides ample space from 357 up to 487 cubic feet. For van lifers and campers — this means a person up to 6′ 5″ can stand freely in the back. As a bonus, with the addition of the heavy-duty trailer package, the van has the capability to tow up to 2,000 kg of luggage and goods.

Extras that can’t be beat

The Transit Trail van comes standard with dark Palazzo grey cloth featuring 4-way manual swivel driver and passenger seats. This allows you multifunctional control and configuration for additional living area seating when you want to relax on your adventure. In addition, the technology has been upgraded with SYNC using a 12-inch touchscreen for co-pilot 360 technology, and Fordpass Connect to keep you connected to your van and fleet. The cabin even has 110-volt, 12-volt and USB outlets for all your camping and power needs.

New Ford Transit Custom Active

The New Ford Transit Custom Active was designed to look stylish and strong, while putting even more strength and control in your hands. This is the van to buy if you need tons of space or want that next level camper van.

Built to look and work tough

The exterior of the New Ford Transit Custom Active is designed to stand out from the crowd. Unique 17″ alloy wheels and a signature grille paired with a full-length sidestep means you get looks, function, and style. Additional cladding on the wheel arches, body sides, rear bumper, and mirror caps make the exterior tough enough for the trail less travelled. The remarkable looks and function continue inside the cab, with partial leather trim and ‘Nordic blue’ stitching.

Power and traction

The Transit Active doesn’t just look good; it runs like a beast. Powered by a 2.0 litre Ecoblue diesel or you can choose the optional Ecoblue 48-volt mild hybrid powertrain, plus the Fordpass Connect modem technology provides all the power, comfort, and traction control you will need —including driver assist. The Active provides the option of adding the Quaife mechanical limited-slip differential — for manual transmission only. The extra help of the MLSd allows for even more assistance. It locks up the wheels that are unable to move due to being stuck, and diverts torque to the free wheels, freeing you from mud, ruts, or anything nature throws at you. This van also provides fuel efficiency and eco-friendly emissions, making it a total package deal.

Storage and flexibility offered by Transit Custom Active

The best part of the New Ford Transit Custom Active, aside from its power and traction, is its stowability. The rear seats sit on a rail system, allowing for complete flexibility. Turn the seats to face each other for socialisation, or take them out for more storage space, you can even use the seat’s mounting points to install an in-vehicle rack for bikes, tools and more. The storage and towability doesn’t end there. The Active comes standard with a roof rack, plus can tow up to 2,500 kg of extra luggage, supplies, or goods. The back doors swing open to 180º and the added sliding side door gives you plenty of ways to access the rear seating and storage.

Extras

To keep you connected to your New Ford Transit Custom Active, each model comes complete with all sorts of smart technology like the FordPass Connect — both in the van and available through the app. The great benefits of the FordPass allow you to keep track of the vans health and other functions, ensuring you always know how your van is doing. There are tie down spots in the cargo area for securing your load. The Ford Active is perfect as a camper conversion, kits and installation can be easily done. For more outlet power, you can have a 240v socket added that supplies 150 watts of additional power. The active was designed for all your posh modification needs.

Freezer and Chiller Vans – Novel Technology by Ford

When you’re running a business, you want only the best in equipment. The multi-award winning Ford Transit family has been a trusted brand for business owners for over 50 years. The Ford Transit Custom family has made waves in the UK with the Ford Transit Custom Freezer and Chiller vans. These vans are making business easier for the local florist, the butcher, and others that need to keep things cold or frozen. If you are in the market for a new van, follow along to learn more.

Power and Savings

If you own a business that requires the transport of cold or frozen items, these vans can’t be beat! Powered by a Duratorq TDCi engine, these vans get around 15 km/l — giving you around 1,100 miles of driving before requiring a refill. Allowing you to spend more on product and less on fuel.

How Do Freezer and Chiller Vans Save Money for My Business?

Conservation and fuel saving are very hot topics nowadays. The Turbo Diesel Commonrail Injection (TCDi) diesel engine is built to deliver torque throughout almost the entire operating range. The way it helps you is by using a turbocharger and common rail injection system to deliver fuel directly to the combustion chamber — making for better performance, less fuel consumption, and an eco-friendlier drive. To put that in more detailed terms, you can achieve around 1,100 km drive time before you need to refuel. If you really want to beef up your savings and fuel efficiency, opt for the Econetic model and achieve an impressive 48 mpg.

Space Galore

Freezer and Chiller vans were designed to provide ample space for all your storage and hauling needs. Their cargo space is 6 cubic metres with a short wheelbase, and 8.3 cubic metres for vans with longer wheelbases. The double back doors on both vans open 90° and 180° for easy loading and unloading. As a bonus, the Ford Transit Custom Van allows for towabilty of a trailer to haul all the extra tools and equipment for your business.

Fancy Extras with Freezer and Chiller Vans

There are a variety of extras you can add to both the Transit Freezer and Chiller vans to make their hauling easier and safer. Among them are floor additions to secure flowers, cargo dividers to keep your cargo separate, and electrical standby (ESB). Curtains and other window treatments can also be added to your load to protect it from the sun, and maybe add a touch of decor.

Ford Transit Custom Chiller Van

The Ford Transit Custom Chiller van is designed to handle everything your business needs to haul and store, with temperatures that range from 0º C and as high as 8º C. The van is perfect for loading and unloading, with the back door opening 180º outward. If you haul a lot of refrigerated items, this van is an excellent piece of equipment to add to your fleet. The bonus to Ford’s Chiller van is in the upgrades. One such bonus is the Chiller’s ability to allow the refrigeration unit to work without the motor running. For an even more posh modification, opt for the upgrade of sectioned areas with separate temperature control, which allows you to haul meat in one area and veggies in the other — meaning your van can work a double shift, instead of you.

The Magic Behind the Technology

The chiller works a lot like your household refrigerator. The first step is adding insulation to ensure airtight operation. A condenser is located in each refrigerated van, which is responsible for condensing hot gas into liquid and dispersing the remaining heat. The liquid then enters the evaporator through a valve, which cools the liquid and circulates it throughout the cargo bay through fans. So your fresh bouquets and sandwiches can stay cool at any temperature you choose.

Who should own it?

With enough space to hold two standard sized palettes, this van is perfect for a florist, chef, restaurant owner who routinely picks up their own supplies, caterer, or anyone who needs to keep their goods chilled during transport.

Ford Transit Custom Freezer Van

Do you haul homemade or pre-packaged ice cream, or maybe seafood? If you need to haul anything frozen to temperatures down to -25º C, the Ford Transit Custom Freezer van is the perfect answer for your business. Some units even add a rapid defrost option that reverses the process used to freeze to thaw your load quickly and safely. This freezer van can even be customised to allow the freezer to work without the motor running, so you can rest assured your cargo is safe from spoilage — even on those summer nights. If you want even more extras, Ford is not shy to deliver. Upgrading to a higher trim level will net you with extras like alloy wheels, parking sensors, cruise control, and a DAB radio.

How does the freezer unit work?

The magic of the freezer van is thicker insulation, and reinforced doors to keep the temperature from fluctuating. This unit can be set to much colder temperatures — between 4º and -25º C. In addition to fibreglass casings and copper plumbing, it has low-maintenance components, which makes it a quality and long-lasting option. This means you have all the control you need to transport your frozen goods safely and efficiently with an in-cab display.

Who should own the Transit Custom Freezer van?

If you own or plan to start a meat or seafood transportation company, Ice Cream company, catering business, or restaurant — this van is perfect for you.

When you’re running a business, you want only the best in equipment. The multi-award winning

Going on a camping trip is the pinnacle of fun. Getting to your remote camping spot has been made easy with the Ford Transit Custom Trail and Active. The Ford Transit family is well known and celebrated as having the best electric vans in the UK for business and pleasure. These two vans were made to haul it all for a business or facilitate fun with their off-road capabilities, loads of extras, and additional customisation options. These vans were meant to hit the trail, go wherever life takes you, and be eco-friendly in the process.

Enjoy Power and Control with Transit Custom Trail and Active

The Ford Transit Custom family was built for power and control, even on the road less travelled. Powered by a 2.0-litre Ecoblue diesel engine plus an added 48-volt mild hybrid powertrain, the vans offer fuel efficiency and immense power — while keeping the ecosystem cleaner. With regenerative braking, the van’s battery is recharged while you are driving; this allows you to go longer between refills and reduces fuel and emissions. To further add efficiency, there are selectable driving modes — normal for everyday use or EcoMode to enhance performance. Plus, the vans feature driver assistance technology. It’s basically like having someone else drive for you, with so many features that make driving faster, safer, and more convenient than ever. Of Course for real off road driving nothing is better than the Land Rover Defender

Off-road Driving with Ford Trail and Active

The Trail and Active were built to go off-road with the use of mechanical limited-slip differential (mLSD), including electronic stability control with a manual transmission. These vans are Front-Wheel Drive, with their movability and traction, you would never know. If you want all-wheel drive instead, they can be equipped with Intelligent All-Wheel drive. Going down rocky or muddy roads is easy with these vans. A bonus is the smart features that provide assistance even in a sticky situation. Warning, though, if you get stuck in a rut or mud, you will need to disable the stability control so the differential can help you get out.

How does the  mLSD work?

Quaife’s mLSD technology allows the vans to find the path of least resistance by locking up stuck wheels and diverting torque to the free wheels, thus helping you gain traction to get out of mud, ruts, or wherever you’re stuck. It even helps with wet slippery roads. With all the technology and extras on these tough vans, it’s not like you’re getting stuck too often so the adventure can continue without stress on you or the van.

Storage and Seating

If cycling in the wild is your idea of a splendid day, you will love the Active! The rear seats run on a rail system. Meaning all seats can be removed to allow in-vehicle racks to be installed for your bicycles. There are even options for added securing devices to keep your bikes steady while on the move. The seats in the Active can also be moved around to allow more space for passengers, or reversed for conferences or a more social setting. The Active comes standard with a roof rack for extra storage space, the Trail can be customised to include one — making more space for bicycles or luggage. All this stowability allows you to focus on the fun ahead with Ford Transit Custom, instead of how you will stow it all.

Extras Available with Ford Custom Trail and Active

For extras available, the Ford Transit family can’t be beat. The Fordpass Connect modem and access to the Pro app, allows you to unlock a wide range of connectivity, and one touch control of several functions. This includes alerts enabling you to track the health of your electric van, plus location tracking through your phone. The smart features don’t stop there. With a blind spot information system and traffic sign recognition, you can stay aware of upcoming traffic and the road itself better.

The Transit Custom comes standard with the Ford Sync 3. You can control your radio, music, navigation system, and stay connected with the 8″ colour touchscreen — use your voice, tap, or pinch and swipe to control. It gets better — never be stuck with a surprise flat tire again, the pressure monitoring system will alert you to punctures and low pressure with an icon that lights up on the instrument panel. With all the built-in power, plus the extras, you can travel to all the places you want to see and bring back pictures of your wild adventures to share with everyone. The New Land Rover Defender

Camper Can Be Added

If you are an avid camper or just love the van life, the Transit family vans are well known to be great candidates for DIY or professional camper conversions — especially with its wide body and average 8.3 cubic metres of load space. They have even been chosen as the #1 pick in the UK for camper van conversions. There’s ample space to put a bed, yet still have room for a small kitchen and bathroom. Some camper van conversions even have a small stove and oven setup with cabinets.

To make your camper conversion more comfortable, there is an optional roof fan available. The options for turning this van into a camper for your van life or off-road adventures are unlimited. If a complete DIY job doesn’t sound ideal to you, there are conversion kits available, or you can have it professionally converted. The best part is, the 2023 Transit Trail may offer a camper van right off the showroom floor, according to hints on Twitter from Ford’s CEO. For now, a nice conversion will keep you travelling in style and increase the value of the Ford Transit Custom Trail and Active for the future.

How to Convert Your Ford Trail or Active Van?

Once you’ve decided to convert your van, it’s time to figure out your layout. Start by measuring the inside space — allowing room for your bed, cooking area, and bathroom or portable toilet. If you need ideas, search online for layout ideas — there are plenty of pictures and articles to inspire you. After measuring and planning the layout, it is time to add electric, water, gas, insulation, and lighting. Setting aside money to hire a professional to install the electric, water, and gas is well advised.  Next step is thinking about the interior decor and functionality, then adding the furnishing. Ford Transit Custom Trail & Active for Better Traction

When people think of Ford and work vehicles, the first thought is usually about trucks. The Ford Transit Custom Trail and the Ford Transit Active solve all the same problems that a truck can, with more flexibility, space, and speed — wrapped in a more aerodynamic package. These vans perform like a truck and easily offer over twice as much seating than a truck for your employees. Ford’s got you covered with towability and storage options in both vans as well.

Which one is better, though? We will go over the features of these two super vans, so you can choose the best fit for your needs. Before we get into logistics, let’s talk about how Ford has solved some other issues across the Transit van line — money-saving, conservation issues, mobility, and control included.

Save Money On Fuel

The price of fuel has hit an all-time high. Increasing a whopping 404% in the last year! There is no sign of the price going down either. To save your pockets from the pain this increase can cause, buying a hybrid or full electric vehicle is one of the best steps you can take.

These two vans answer that issue by combining a 2.0 litre Ecoblue hybrid diesel engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrain. The results? A van that uses less fuel, is mildly self-sufficient, has smart features, and is eco-friendly. The small battery-powered motor of the powertrain allows you to charge the batteries while driving — ensuring you are always on the move. To add to that, the technology allows for cleaner emissions, saving the planet from the toxic fumes of a workhorse, yet still enabling the work to be done. A win for nature and you!

Getting You Where You Need To Go

Fuel and money aren’t the only things these two vans save. The Ford Transit custom family was built with the unique challenge of getting you and your business wherever the customers are. With a limited-slip differential in the manual transmission models, these two vans can get out of some of the toughest spots.

The limited-slip differential is designed to work by intuitively finding the path of least resistance. If you get stuck in the mud with your left tires, the right ones will bear the brunt of the work, and the left ones will be kept from moving. Allowing you to avoid getting stuck in the muck.

Ford Transit Custom Trail

Built to be a powerhouse for any location

Speaking of power and traction, the Ford Transit Custom Trail is a mid-sized van built to go where few people can. This van comes with some pretty beefy features. Unfortunately, it does not have a four-wheel drive option, but you will not miss it. The Trail Comes standard with the Quaife mechanical limited-slip differential for improved traction and control.

Used by motorsport competitors to keep them on the track even at breakneck speeds, the Quaife limited-slip differential is the perfect solution on a snowy or muddy day. It turns the limited-slip differential into a beast. A button on the dashboard allows you to select either slippery or mud/rut roads — enabling drive assist through the differential. Stability control is quite literally at your fingertips. No more need for a tow truck.

Travelling for work made easy

For those who travel for work, the most expensive part of the job is having a place to stay the night. The Ford Custom Trail can easily be converted into a camper van. This also makes it a hit for the travel blogger or frequent camper who would like a posh modified camper van.

Who would the Trail be better for?

The Trail is perfect for construction workers, travel bloggers, or anyone that often travels off the beaten path. With its pure power, excellent control, and stability, this van will go anywhere and pull everything you need.

Ford Transit Active

Built for storage and style

The Ford Transit Active may not have the ability to go off-road as much as the Trail, but what it lacks in muscle, it makes up for in looks and storage.

If you have fluctuating storage and passenger needs based on different jobs, you will enjoy the flexibility of the Active. The back seats sit on runners, making it easy to move the seats to suit your needs. You can stage a meeting for the team while you drive by turning the seats to face each other. Then, when the need for more space to haul tools and supplies than people arises — just remove the seats. There is also an option for a mounted track system to secure cycles, equipment, or materials inside. As a bonus, the active also has a built-in roof rack that comes as a standard. This van was made with all your storage and transportation needs in mind.

Beef it up

Unlike the Ford Transit Custom Trail, the Ford Transit Active does not come with the Quaife LSD, but it can be added for an extra £550.

Who would the Active suit better?

The Ford Transit Active is perfect for construction companies or others who may need to take lots of tools, supplies, and people off the beaten path to forge new roads or beginnings. Having more than one Active is useful — one for people and one for supplies.
