What new features does the Ford Ranger 2023 bring to the table for the truck’s enthusiasts?  The new level trims up for grabs are the Tremor and Wildtrak X, specially designed for the toughest off-road exploration.

The 2023 Ford Ranger presents the Wildtrak model as its most weighty trim level. The two new models not only have refreshed looks but also come with Blisten dampers reworked chassis, and suspension components to beat the off-road extremities.

Other than that, the new Ranger truck has also made changes to its prices. But before jumping right into the prices, it’s worth knowing the key features that this new truck brings to the table.

Who Is the New Ford Ranger 2023 Trim Levels Built For?

The Wildtrak X and Tremor trim levels are already available to order in the UK for those looking for heightened off-road experiences. Equipped with massive capabilities to handle rugged terrains, these pickup trucks borrow a lot from the well-renowned off-road mode, Ranger Raptor.

In addition, the Blisten dampers give the Tremor a superior ride height of 26mm and a 30mm width track for better off-road performance. The truck’s underneath is well guarded with a steel bash plate to keep the running gear free from debris.

Its exterior features heavy-duty side steps built from cast aluminium while its front bumper houses rigid tow hooks. The hooks will come in handy to rescue other vehicles stuck in a pool of mud.

The interior appeal

Its off-road build doesn’t end with the exterior. The pickup truck’s inside theme best fits the off-road appeal, featuring seats and floor with a viny trim for water resistance. This makes it easier to clean the truck after a long tiring day of mudding.

Electronic upgrades

Unlike its parent truck, the new 2023 Ford Ranger Tremor offers a new set of electronics such as the Trail Turn Assist. This vectoring system comes in handy when negotiating corners by applying brakes to produce a 25% more tightened turning radius.

The 2023 Ford Ranger Wildtrak X – All is There to Know

 

Just like the Tremor, the Ford Ranger Wildtrak X also borrows from another previous generation truck, the Wildtrak. It’s okay to say that the Wildtrak X trim is sandwiched between the Wildtrak and the Ford Platinum, another newly revealed Ranger truck.

Everything is similar to the Wildtrak, from bumper colours, and steering wheels, to the engine. It’s an upgrade, compared to the Tremor, even though the two trucks share similar off-road features and electronics. Wildtrak X has a taller ride height, it’s wider and has a more aggressive off-road appeal than the ordinary Wildtrak.

The exterior look

This trim has more rugged 265/70 R17 General Grabber AT3 tires built for all terrains. Plus, the steel bash plate on the front bumper underneath protects it from debris and mud.

The Wildtrak X has a more intuitive appeal courtesy of the matrix LED headlights and the Asphalt Black grille featuring Cyber Orange detailing for an attractive contrast. The looks are further heightened with the attractive badges, the aggressive Ford emblems, and the 17-inch alloy wheels.

The interior appeal

Inside the 2023 Ford Ranger Wildtrak X, the dashboard and seats feature suede upholstery for a chic look and comfort. These are augmented with Cyber Orange stitches plus the 12-inch touchscreen and the 12.4 digital instrument display.

The seats are embroidered with the elegant Wildtrak X trademark, featuring soothing Terra suede and Cyber Orange stitches on upper dashboards, centre console, and door trims. Wildtrak X also comes with standard in-built connectivity to Ford Pro and FordPass 6 services to enhance the occupants’ experience.

The engine and the mechanicals

The Wildtrak X draws power from the EcoBlue twin-turbo diesel engine with a 4-cylinder and 2.0 litre capacity. Like the Tremor, this engine gives this trim a 202bhp and a torque of 500Nm. If you compare these figures against the Platinum with a 3.0 litre V6 turbo engine, and Raptor’s 3.0 litre V6 twin-turbo engine, they look inferior. But still, the power output is capable enough to handle the pickup’s load and off-road terrains.

 

The Wildtrak X’s power runs through all four wheels via its 10-speed auto-gearbox controlled by the high-level full-time 4-wheel drive system.

The Wildtrak X has a suspension upgrade featuring advanced power steering and a flashy off-road driver assist technology known as the Trail Turn Assist. Like the Tremor, this Trail Turn Assist uses brake-based torque vectoring to produce a 25% tighter turning circle while off-road. This trim achieves this through the chassis, which operates more like a skid-steer loader.

Supplementary features of Ford Ranger Tremor and Wildtrak X

Both pickup trucks offer additional features that are optional depending on your preferences. For instance, these new trim levels offer an elegant Flexible Rack System, featuring an adjustable black roll-over hoop fitted on the cabin. It slides backward allowing easier transportation of longer items.

Although the tracking system is advertised with a surfboard, it’s ideal for carrying items like scaffolding boards, wood, and piping boards. The hoop can slide back to the preferred setting then load anything on top, then strapped down.  It carries a maximum load capacity of 80kg dynamic weight and up to 250kg static weight.

The new Ford Rangers trim levels offer completely new bodywork inspired by the bigger and more aggressive American trucks. The most evident changes are a new box-shaped look with front lighting monicker copied from Ford Ranger F-150.

The new Ranger also borrows from the previous generation’s ladder frame type of chassis. The upgrade includes a wheelbase that’s 50mm longer and a 50mm wider track, each built for an augmented off-road driving experience.

Ford also adopted a better way of increasing airflow to the radiator and boosting performance through the front-end hydro-formed structure. This adoption significantly improves powertrain cooling especially when towing or carrying a heavy load.

The Interior Appeal Worth Looking Forward To

 

Ford did a tremendous improvement to the interior of both Wildtrak X and Tremor compared to their parent pickup trucks. The cheaper models offer 10.1-inch infotainment displays while high-end ones boast a 12-inch display system.

The displays are powered by Sync 4A, which is the latest display syncing software by Ford. The system harbours plenty of features such as remote lock, remote start, and night-mode support.

For those who opt for high-spec automatic models, the e-shifter is something worth looking forward to. It’s an improvement of the mechanical lever for engaging the gear. The old manual parking brake is also replaced with an electronic one for easy operability.

How Much Will You Part with For the New 2023 Ford Ranger?

The Ford Ranger Wildtrak X and Tremor are already available to order in the UK and Europe. But surprisingly, Ford has not disclosed the purchase prices for its new trim levels. But we can estimate where the prices are likely to start from, based on the flagship model, Ranger Raptor.

The automaker announced its plans to begin production with the California variant, which will feature the latest technologies in the automotive industry suited for camping.

The Multivan is the 7th generation of Volkswagen’s line of transporter vans, which has seen tremendous upgrades over the years. The notable change was the upgrade from its van-based chassis to Modularer Querbaukasten (MQB) architecture.  This change will open the doors to a whole new generation of campervans aimed at enhancing the driving experience.

VW is yet to reveal more concrete information on the new Multivan California but gave an assurance of more to come in the year.

More exciting feature upgrades

 

Through its VW Commercial Vehicles CEO, Carsten Intra, the automaker announced that it has plans to improve its digital services on the new campervan. These services are expected to complement every purchase of the California campervan.

Even though VW Transporter makes a good reference for the new campervan, VW chose the Volkswagen Multivan for its more comforting feel and also because the former is an outgoing model. The Multivan will account for a greater percentage of the features of the California campervan.

The Multivan was developed in partnership with the American automaker, Ford, which means that the VW California will also borrow from Ford Transit Custom.

Features to Look forward to on the 2023 VW Multivan California

The Multivan already presents plenty of features that suit camping enthusiasts. Although VW has not disclosed any more details about the California camper, we can estimate what the new exciting people carrier is likely to feature.

Interior look

VW California campervan will offer a spacious and more flexible interior that can be configured in different ways to suit camping needs. Like the parent Multivan, this campervan will accommodate 7 people with foldable rear seats to pave way for a spacious sleeping area.

The Multivan California will also improve the pop-out cupholders present in the current Multivan to provide better ergonomics for users. The double-decker storage pockets are likely to be retained or improved altogether. But VW will without a doubt add more stylish under-the-seat slide-out drawers to allow users to store their valuables.

Camping facilities

Being a campervan, we expect the Multivan California to harbour plenty of features to boost camping experiences. These include a pop-up roof with a double bed, a foldable table, and chairs. The Multivan California is also expected to come with a rear attached tent, cooker kitchenette, and sink.

 

The campervan is expected to harbour a similar tailgate as that on Caddy California, which is a versatile pull-out kitchenette. The gas stove has a one-burner with lots of storage space, including a cutlery drawer.

Another camping feature worth looking forward to is the windows with blinds to add more privacy while out in the wild. Like the Caddy California, the VW Multivan California is expected to add a higher level of privacy with the blinds and support a good night’s sleep.

Technology

We expect Multivan California to adopt high-end technologies to make camping outdoors more exciting. One of the features includes a digital cockpit to enhance safe commutes and enhanced vehicle performance monitoring.

The current Multivan has a 10-inch touchscreen and 10.25-inch digital cockpit instruments, but is somewhat laggy, especially when booting up. We expect the new Multivan California to improve on these with a bigger, 12-inch touchscreen and 12.5 digital instruments with better performance.

We expect VW to retain the minimalist dashboard of Multivan but incorporate additional wireless charging pads.

Engine performance

As already highlighted, we expect the Multivan California to be available in a plug-in hybrid powertrain. VW already confirmed it will be based on the MQB platform, but on top of this, we expect it to have a turbocharged 1.4-liter petrol engine and an electric motor. The motor is to be powered by a 13 kWh Li-ion battery pack and a 7-speed DSG.

The current Multivan has 1.5 TSI and 2.0 TSI engine variants and 2.0 TDI, so it won’t be a surprise if the Multivan California adopts the same.

Suspension and driving comfort

Just like the VW Multivan, the California campervan is primarily an on-road van and cannot handle rugged off-road terrains. However, it is expected to have a better steering system and suspension and to enhance comfortable driving on different road surfaces.

 

Another sure fact is that the campervan will retain the same ground clearance as the Multivan, therefore won’t be ideal for off-road driving. However, it is expected to handle lightweight off-road driving on flat surfaces. It will also be able to cruise through dirt tracks, gravel roads, and other less muddy surfaces.

These are just a few of the features that Volkswagen Multivan California 2023 will build as well as add new ones. But we will have to wait for VW to release official information to know for sure if these features will be present.

Key Features of Multivan That California Campervan Will Adopt

Since Multivan California campervans will be based on the MQB platform, there’s a higher possibility that it will also have other variants apart from diesel. As we already know, the Multivan has a plug-in hybrid variant that has an 85kW electric motor paired with a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine.  If VW adopts the same for the campervan, it will give the vehicle up to 48.3 km (30 miles) extra mileage. A combination of the two can produce up to 215 hp.

That means that the VW Multivan California campervan will also gain an upper hand in the market against similar models from other automakers. Some of the existing competitors of California include the Ford Transit Custom Nugget and the Mercedes Benz V-Class Marco Polo. These models are diesel-only, so California will most likely have a more competitive advantage.

The Multivan California campervan also can have an all-electric version like the Long-wheelbase (LWB) VW ID Buzz set for release later in the year. The market currently has very few fully electric campervans, but there exist campervan conversions that borrow from Toyota Proace City Electric and Nissan NV200.

How Much Will The 2023 VW Multivan California Cost?

Not much is known about the model, leave alone the price. The Multivan California campervan will be a replacement for California 6.1, which borrows a lot from the Transport 6.1 currently being phased out. The California 6.1 has not yet left the market and is being sold with a starting price of £60,398.

 

Projecting the price of the new Multivan California from the current price of California 6.1, we expect an increment to hike the price to £67,000. At this price, it means that the new VW California is expected to give its competitors a strong rivalry.

The Transit Nugget price is more aligned with the expected price tag of the new California campervan. However, the Mercedes Benz Marco Polo costs much higher than this, so buyers will have to compare features before settling for their preferred campervan.

When is the 2023 VW Multivan California Set to Make Entry?

The VW Multivan California campervan is most likely to make entry into the market in 2023 although there are claims that it may be released later on in 2024. After the release, VW won’t stop at that. The automaker announced plans to expand its campervan line-up with more features in 2025. This includes the launch of its fully electric ID Buzz California model.

The Volkswagen ID Buzz California is set for release in 2025, after the LWB ID Buzz later on in 2023. The former will have lots of features including improved seat flexibility. The seating capacity will be seven, featuring three rows, which can be pulled back to create more space for sleeping. The driver’s seat will have 360 degrees of rotatability for more flexibility.

Another possible variant set for release this year is the Volkswagen ID Buzz GTX, which is a more performance-oriented campervan with 335bhp and a custom-designed interior.

The new Ford Ranger pickup will roll out on roads (and off roads) with V6 Engine from early 2023. One of the few drawbacks of the previous Ford Ranger models was the lack of the option for a larger, more powerful engine. This was noticed especially by those who extensively used their Ranger for off-roading, heavy towing, or for regularly carrying near-capacity loads. The new Ford Ranger 2023 has addressed this shortcoming and Ford, after extensively consulting and obtaining feedback from previous model Ranger drivers, are now offering a powerful V6 diesel that is seriously heavy on the torque. 

V6 Engine – Options

Ford is offering a 2.0-litre turbocharged Ecoblue four-cylinder at the entry-level which covers some of the trim options for the new 2023 Ford Ranger, including the XL and XLT specifications. The 2.0-litre version is a fully serviceable offering with 202bhp (150kW) and 500Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque with a fuel efficiency rating of approximately 7.26L/100km or 32.4mpg. There are some different drive and transmission options, along with some upgrades, available for the entry-level Ford Ranger 2023.

At the high end of the trim range, the Ford Ranger 2023 Wildtrak and Platinum will come with a 3.0L TD Ecoblue V6 diesel engine with 247bhp (184kW) and 600Nm (443 lb-ft) with a fuel efficiency of approximately 8.6L/100km or 27.4mpg. 600Nm is a lot of torque. The V6 diesel engines are connected to the 10-speed automatic transmission across both trim levels with options to switch between or simply select ‘set and forget’ four-wheel and all-wheel drive options. All these elements combine to create a powerful V6 engine that has the torque needed to get the job done easily and responsively. 

The 3.0-litre V6 diesel 

There is a lot of appeal to the beefier 3.0L V6 diesel engine on the new Ford Ranger but let’s acknowledge the obvious drawback right from the start. Fuel efficiency. A larger engine needs more fuel to run effectively. The 2.0-litre Ford Ranger four-cylinder engine is a more fuel-efficient engine, than its 3.0-litre V6 counterpart. However, that fuel efficiency isn’t always meaningful or realistic when putting the smaller engine under heavy strain in real-world driving situations, even with being turbocharged. 

When looking at the types of loads or extreme off-roading a Ford Ranger can be expected to endure, a larger engine, with more power and more torque can become both more reliable and efficient as a V6 engine is designed to endure these heavier workloads. The overall increased engine size results in a more powerful engine that is capable of enduring heavier loads and when a pickup is expected to work hard more power is essential. Everything about the new Ford Ranger 2023 V6 engine is designed with the hauling, towing and off-roading expected of a vehicle like this in mind. The torque produced is intended to give the best drive even in difficult conditions. The best thing about the new Ford Ranger 3.0-litre V6 diesel is that it is pretty much up to any challenge you can think to throw at it.

We have already talked about torque a little, giving the impressive number of 600Nm of torque in the new Ford Ranger 2023 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine. But what does that number mean when driving in the real world? Most of us understand the significance of the number of cylinders (for example V6) or the size of an engine (3.0-litre) and the type of fuel being used (diesel or petrol) and how these factors influence what vehicle we choose and how it will perform.

So, what is an alloy wheel, anyway?

What makes a wheel an alloy wheel?

Technically, all automotive wheels are made from a metal alloy but not all wheels are alloy wheels. How does this work? A metal alloy is simply a combination of metals or metals and other elements that are blended and treated to produce a specific effect. The basic form of the most common standard wheels is steel, which is a metal alloy made up of around 98% iron and 2% carbon. Standard steel wheels tend to be heavy, but they get the job done. In the automotive world, the term ‘alloy wheels’ refers to nonferrous (which means they aren’t made from iron) wheels.

Typically, alloy wheels are comprised of a different combination of metals, most frequently 98% Aluminium and 2% of another metal or metals which can include titanium, nickel, zinc, or copper. Another common term that refers to a type of alloy wheel is ‘mags’ which refers to wheels made from a magnesium-based alloy. Aluminium – alloy. Magnesium – mags. Makes sense. Magnesium is the lightest of the three base wheel metals, but it is also more corrosive which can result in a compromise on durability.

The lightness, strength and durability of aluminium means it has become the most frequently used base metal for alloy wheels. Alloy wheels can be manufactured in a variety of ways including forging and casting. Compared to standard pressed steel wheels, there are many different casting techniques, including gravity cast, high pressure diecast, and low pressure diecast, which, when used in conjunction with specific repeated heating and cooling techniques, create alloy wheels with different weight, performance, durability, appearance and price outcomes in the New Ford Ranger Lease
