1.  You Don’t Own the Vehicle

New Van Drivers App could save you 15% on Van Insurance

Car and van insurance company Direct Line has unveiled a new free-to-use smartphone app called DrivePlus Van for business users. DrivePlus Van uses the GPS function on a smartphone to record driving behaviour during journeys and could mean discounts of up to 15 per cent on insurance for van drivers. Are petrol vans for sale cheaper?

Black box-type devices that monitor a driver’s behaviour on the road (such as speed, cornering or braking) and record it for insurance purposes – rewarding better behaviour with lower insurance premiums – have been around for several years. These are popular with private car users in high-risk categories, such as younger drivers or those who only drive locally.

They are also popular with van drivers and van fleet managers, as they help to promote responsible driving – and therefore cheaper, lower-risk van insurance premiums. In fact, it is estimated by US-based market research company ABI Research that there will be more than 107million insurance policies using telematics-based monitoring systems by 2018.

 

No Black Box Required

Where DrivePlus Van differs from conventional black box monitoring insurance policies, however, is that it doesn’t require any ‘black box’ GPS tracking hardware to be installed in your vehicle – it simply uses your phone to monitor your driving. It’s also more convenient, as it isn’t a permanent fixture.

Once a user has logged 300 miles of travel in their van, they are scored out of 100 (100 being a perfect score) and are then shown a promotional discount code that they can redeem via the Direct Line for Business website or on the telephone. The app  – and therefore also the discount  – is available both to existing Direct Line for Business customers and van drivers or small business owners thinking about switching to Direct Line.

Users can also choose which journeys they log, or can untag any journeys that might have been on public transport or as a passenger in another car. DrivePlus Van also allows you to review the details of your journey, such as the time it took, the distance travelled, and your driving score. It also records which behaviours impacted the driving score for the journey and how they did so.

Jasvinder Gakhal at Direct Line for Business said: “We’re bringing telematics technology to owners of single vans in an easy-to-use app. With capital still stretched for many small businesses, owners of commercial vans are understandably concerned about the costs and risks of operating their vehicle. Telematics encourages responsible driving and through our app this can earn drivers a significant discount on their insurance.”

The free DrivePlus Van app is available for both iPhone (for users with iOS 6 and above) and Android (for 2.2 Froyo or newer) operating systems. It can be downloaded from the Apple AppStore or Android’s Google Play.

Car Driving Version Available

A DrivePlus app is also available for private passenger car insurance policies, although this only requires the user to record 200 miles-worth of journeys in return for a potential discount on their policy of up to 10 per cent.

Business Finance acceptance rates higher than you think

A new report conducted by The British Bankers Association (BBA) suggests that British businesses are more likely to get accepted for business finance than they think.  Fear of rejection when applying for business finance affects growth.  However it is also limiting what could be a significant boost to the economy.

Businesses Fearful of Rejection don’t apply for Business Finance

The BBA surveyed 15,000 small to medium-sized enterprises.  Only 37% thought they would be successful if they applied for business finance. The BBA says the fear of being rejected is a major contributing factor in the decision by 15,000 businesses not to apply.

67% are accepted

BBA Chief Executive Anthony Browne said, “We want to let business in the transport sector know that they are a lot more likely to get business finance than they think.

If the businesses that had decided not to go for finance changed their minds, 3,000 UK companies would expand, 2,700 orders for equipment would be made and 6,5000 enterprises would have their spending power increased.

The BBA’s intend to target businesses with a turnover of £25 million or less to let them know that funding is available.  They will provide advice on lending options for business by region.  They will also provide mentors to help businesses grow and the betterbusinessfinance.co.uk website will also provide companies with a means for starting a challenge to any rejection they might get.

Professor Russell Briggs OBE is an Independent Reviewer of the Appeals Process. He believes the BBA campaign is a welcome move for SMEs and said,

“Initiatives like this show that banks are working hard to make sure businesses know their right of appeal if their application is rejected.

“Entrepreneurs and SMEs should approach their bank knowing that they have the right to appeal any decision the bank takes.”

Fred Gleeson died just before his 80th Birthday

If your van does not have adequate rear visibility, it is now categorically your legal duty to take steps to protect people and property when reversing.

£75,000 Prosecution Costs

Small business owner Mark Walker was fined £7,500 by Reading Crown Court and ordered to undertake 250 hours of community work after being found guilty of two separate breaches of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 when he accidentally reversed into a customer in his van. He is also liable for £75,000 in prosecution costs, which will be covered through insurance.

The customer, a former pub landlord Frederick Gleeson, 79, from Staines, Surrey, sustained fatal head injuries in the incident at Complete Car Care on Welley Road, Wraysbury, on March 12, 2012, which occurred after he dropped his car off to Mr. Walker to have an oil leak checked.  Mr. Gleeson was still on the driveway when Mr. Walker reversed his van, which collided with him.  Mr. Gleeson fell to the floor, hitting his head on the driveway and despite being rushed to Wrexham Park hospital, he died later of his injuries.

Reversing Camera not Used

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) identified that Mark Walker had no system in place for safely managing the movement of vehicles, particularly reversing vehicles, in his yard and had no direct rear visibility from his vehicle, and was not using the rear monitoring camera that had retrospectively been fitted to the vehicle.

The HSE decided that Mr. Walker should have either:

  • used the reversing camera,
  • physically checked whether the reversing area was clear, or
  • arranged for another person to assist him when reversing.

He took none of these precautions and despite there clearly being no intention on Mr. Walker’s part to cause harm and the death being entirely accidental, in his summing up, the judge ruled that Walker’s breach of duty was a direct cause of Gleeson’s death.

Death was ‘entirely preventable’

After sentencing, HSE Inspector Nigel Fitzhugh said: “Mr Gleeson’s tragic death was entirely preventable, and could have been avoided had Mark Walker taken precautions before reversing his van.

“Managing the movement of vehicles at his premises was entirely his responsibility and it is clear there was no system in place to control this.

“Pedestrians and vehicles should always be segregated, and if that cannot happen then other precautions should be put in place.

“On this occasion that should, at the very least, have included checking the rear of the van before reversing with assistance if necessary, or putting in place a system that meant he did not have to reverse from his premises, neither of which happened.”

Human Tragedy

Both Mr. Walker and Mr Gleeson’s heartbroken family have to live with the consequences of the entirely preventable accident which cost a popular former pub landlord his life.  Daughter Sarah Goode spoke to the Herald & News on behalf of the family.

“We are just relieved he [Walker] has been found guilty and is finally going to be making some changes, which is good.  It’s been a real stress. It could have been resolved so much sooner.  2012 would have seen his 80th birthday”
