The Vauxhall Vivaro is a great medium sized van and the Sportive versions, normally available in Silver and Black give a sporty looking van for a very competitive price.

Vivaro has a choice of two 2.0-litre and a 2.5-litre Euro 4 common rail turbodiesel engines. The two smaller capacity units replaced the previous 1.9-litre powerplants in 2006. They produce 90hp and 115hp, and develop peak torque of 240Nm and 290Nm. The 2.5-litre is an uprated version of the previous engine, reworked to meet the Euro 4 emission regulations and capable of producing 150hp at 3,500rpm and developing 317Nm of peak torque at 1,600rpm.

These new diesels are smooth in their power delivery, have a wide spread of torque and are relatively vibrationfree. They are all mated to a six-speed manual gearbox with a dash-mounted gearstick. Handling and ride are well up to par compared to the competition, as are the brakes. Discs are employed in all four corners and ABS is a standard feature. Vivaro is remarkably manoeuvrable, and is available in SWB and LWB version (price is for a SWB)

Reliability is a strong point for the Vauxhall Vivaro, and many owners have covered high mileages without reporting any major problems. If buying second-hand, check for kerbing damage to the wheels and the condition of the tyres, and also make sure the steering is correctly aligned. Some drivers have encountered problems with the Tecshift automated transmission.

This is the same basic set-up as the standard manual box, but with an automated gearchange and clutch mechanism, and it seems that the actuator system and electronic control unit can throw up issues with gear selection.

British Built Vans – Vauxhall Fly the Flag.

While van sales in the UK may be soaring,  production of British Built vans is continuing to fall.  Latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT), showed that UK production of commercial vehicles had dropped by almost 22 per cent in 2013. Try a VW Caddy Lease 

Lack of British-Built Vans blamed on Struggling Economy

SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes doesn’t expect to see any dramatic increase in UK production, but small crew vans for sale with the group blaming the lack of british-built vans on the  struggling economy throughout mainland Europe, transit dropside and manufacturers streamlining production.  eThe UK van industry received a massive blow in 2013 when Ford transit sport for sale  ended production of the Transit in Southampton.  Production has now moved to Turkey, where costs are “significantly lower” than in western Europe, according to Ford.  Vauxhall also manufacture their small ‘Combo’ vans in Turkey for the same reason, and the popular larger Movano is made in France.

Chief Secretary: ‘Our Automotive Sector is Doing Well’

Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander told BBC Radio 4’s World at One:

‘This very difficult news shouldn’t hide the fact, though, that our automotive sector is doing well.

‘Britain is now a net exporter of cars for the first time in many decades. We are seeing other companies making big investments in this country.’

One manufacturer still able to call itself a maker of British Built Vans is Vauxhall.  They were the most successful British Van builder last year for the 12th year running, and celebrated booming UK Vivaro sales up 34 per cent year-on-year.
