25 years of Mercedes-Benz Sprinter: A pioneer of safety for a quarter of a century: the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

On the roads since 1995, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is still one of the best vans with active and passive safety precautions. With technologies like ABS, airbags and driving assisting systems, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is still one of the best vans even in its third generation.

The first version in 1995:

In 1995, the available vans did not have any particular safety technologies. Even at that time, the first-generation Mercedes-Benz Sprinter included:

  • All-around disc brakes
  • ABS anti-locking braking system
  • Automatic brake differential
  • Driver airbag
  • Three-point seat belts
  • Seat belt buckles attached to the seat

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter was not just a van, but it was more or less a passenger car. Just like safety, comfort was also prioritized by the Sprinter.

In 2000, the Sprinter was modified with more powerful headlights. A new co-driver airbag was also installed. The previously available-on-demand airbag on the driver’s side was changed into standard equipment. Rather than the comfort and accessibility of a regular van, the passengers on the front seats of the car, including the driver were able to feel the cosiness of an ordinary car.  The gear stick was also modified and the position was changed.

The 2002 version

While there was only one modification in 2001- the window bags- 2002 witnessed more revamps like:

  • Break booster
  • Electronic stability program

ESPS later became a necessary addition in all Sprinters as they assisted drivers in their driving. Even though the mass was increased to 3.5 t, the number of accidents were reduced noticeably.

Sprinter 2006- the second generation

The second-generation Sprinter saw many changes that revolutionized safety and comfort.

  • Increased cargo capacity
  • GFRP transverse leaf spring at the front axle
  • Parabolic springs in the rear axle
  • Air suspension by 30mm
  • Adaptive ESP
  • Wide-angle mirrors
  • Curve lights
  • Rain and light sensor

The new adaptive ESP system detects gravity and prevents the vehicle from rolling back in an inclination.  They were also provided with 16-inch wheels and thorax bags. In 2009, trailer stabilization and brake lights were introduced.

2013: new Sprinter with revolutionary driver assistance systems

The latest technology of 2013 like crosswind assists was included in the Sprinter. Collision prevention assist was also introduced. Brake assist pro, blind spot assist and lane-keeping assist and high beam assist reduced any chance of accidents.

Third generation 2018

In 2018, active Distant Assist Distronic was introduced which keeps the van at a suitable distance from another vehicle at 20 km/hr. The emergency distance warning system can also hold control of the breaks. Reversing camera with 360-degree visibility and Wet Wiper System.

The 2019 and 2020 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van is a popular commercial vehicle that offers versatility, functionality and safety aspects. But 2019 and 2020 vans have some fire-related issues and Mercedes-Benz recalls nearly 53k Sprinter vans due to fire risk.

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a comfortable and safe van which also functions as a passenger car. From its introduction in 1995, it has remained one of the safest and popular options in vans till today.
