Top Scenic Drives in Europe this Summer

Summer is nearly here and with the weather already becoming less bleak people are taking to the roads in their vans to enjoy the great outdoors. If you have a taste for adventure that you are looking to quench, why not consider popping over or under the channel to see the beauty that Europe has to offer?  Last week, we presented you some of UK’s most scenic routes to drive this summer. This week we thought it only fair to let you feast your eyes on some of the places elsewhere in the EU worth a visit and let you decide weather to add these spectacular European road trips to your bucket list or not.

La Corniche – France

The mountainous stretch along the French Riviera from Nice to Menton, offers a fantastic views of the three scenic roads that comprise it: the Corniche Inférieure, the Moyenne Corniche and the Grande Corniche. The Corniche Inférieure is an excellent choice for those who wish to discover quaint fishing villages such as Villefranche-sur-Mer and Eze. The Moyenne Corniche affords a perfect panoramic view of the resorts that pepper the coastline of the French Riviera. The Grand Corniche is worth the drive not only for its historical value but also for picturesque view over Monaco. On the way to the La Corniche, a visit to the charming towns of Marseile, Aix en Provence and Avignon is highly recommended.

La Route des Grandes Alpes- France

 

The High Alps Route is one of the initial tourist routes in France brought about by the collaboration of French car enthusiasts and the French government. It was in 1909 that the Touring Club of France came up with the idea to build a road that will connect France and the Alpine passes. This route affords a stunning drive though Vanoise, Queyras, Ecrin and Mercantour national parks and 16 mountain passes. The highest pass is Iseran at 2,764 meters. As one travels through the shoreline of Lake Geneva down to the Mediterranean Sea, breathtaking views of great mountains and brilliant valleys are presented.

Amalfi Coast – Italy

In 1997, the Amalfi Coast was deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A drive along the seashore of Amalfi Coast’s winding road affords a spending view of historical towns and quaint fishing villages. This part of Italy’s southern region is a perfect holiday destination for one to experience a milder climate and fantastic slice of paradise where the sea and the mountain merge. The scenic route is comprised of 13 towns – Amalfi (the main harbor), Vietri sul Mare, Praiano, Maiori, Ravello, Minori, Atrani, Scala, Furore, Positano and Tramonti.

Trollstigen -Norway

Inaugurated in 1936, the Trollstigen is a mountainous road that connects the Norwegian towns of Valldalen and Åndalsnes. Since its construction, this pass has been a popular tourist destination for people spanning nationalities, professions, and ages. The road’s challenging turns and inclinations are met by thousands of drivers daily. What make this serpentine road more enjoyable are the impressive landscapes that surround it.

Romance Road – Germany

This route is tamer and cuts through the very heart of Germany. The scenic route offers an authentic take of the medieval town with its centuries-old architecture. It is also a good idea to drive through this route in time for the Oktoberfest.
