DVLA Issues Warning about Renewal Reminders by Text and Email

In a concerning development for the Motor Industry, it appears that drivers are receiving text messages or emails regarding a licence which is due for renewal from websites of unknown origin with no link to DVLA whatsoever.

The DVLA Issues Warning to motorists saying that it does not send these types of reminders by text or email and these services are in no way affiliated with the DVLA.  Motorists clicking on the links in the emails or contacting these ‘service providers’ are charged extra for services which are available from DVLA at normal rates.

There is a growing band of  ‘alternative providers’ who assist you in filling in your details online, then submit the application to DVLA on your behalf.  They charge more than DVLA and then forward your completed application to them, the problem is that some motorists may not realise they are not even dealing with DVLA.

One such website, ‘https://driving-licence-application.co.uk’ does clearly state that it is not affiliated to DVLA, but it uses the crown logo at the top of its site which could be construed as misleading.  Among the extra services they claim to offer are the ‘Appealing convenience to fill your application online’.

In fact, DVLA already offer the convenience of online applications.  They have their own website for driving licence renewals and it is only via an official www.gov.uk site that motorists deal directly with the DVLA on any driving issue.  Rule of thumb for drivers – if the website does not have a .gov.uk extension, it is not a DVLA site.

DVLA are also available to answer your driving licence queries free of charge from 8am to 7pm Monday to Friday on  0300 790 6802 – and when you deal direct with DVLA you have the added security of knowing with absolute certainty that your personal data is protected by an official body.
