Transit Custom to Cut Your Cold Chain Costs

Ford’s trusty stalwart, the Transit Custom, is a must for many businesses across the nation. It has evolved over the years and its foray into electric vehicles is further evidence of this.

Electric vehicles are slowly gaining in popularity with van owners across the UK, for varying reasons. For some it’s because of their potential to save precious pounds in fuel spend. Others are attracted to their reduced negative impact on the environment, the ability to attract more green-conscious customers to their business, their relatively quiet engines, or any combination of the above.

Their appeal may only grow in future given the energy crisis facing the country.

Unpredictable petrol and diesel supply, and volatile fuel prices are a serious concern for consumers and businesses. So too is the legislation banning the sale of new conventional petrol/diesel vehicles in the UK as of 2030.

For many people, going fully electric is daunting, with their power, and range in question. This is where the many advantages of a hybrid vehicle may come into play (This extends to chiller and freezer vans, but more on that later).

Back to Ford Transit Custom

Ford’s Transit Custom 2.0L EcoBlue 130ps (with a diesel engine) is built to improve fuel efficiency, thereby cutting running costs, and reduces carbon emissions into the atmosphere.

This van is available in manual or automatic transmission, with various wheelbase, roof height and trim options available. Gross vehicle weights range from 2600kg to 3400kg and payloads from around 700kg to 1 500kg. Air-conditioning is optional.

Fuel is saved due to reduced load on the diesel engine and an enhanced auto start-stop function, which works even when the van has halted but is still in-gear, or it’s decelerating under 12km/h.

Best of all, as it’s a hybrid engine, it does not need to be charged. When the driver hits the brakes or decelerates, energy is captured and stored in a 48V 10Ah lithium-ion battery pack. Ford says the “electrical machine provides torque assistance to the diesel engine and drives electrical ancillaries”.

For the environmentally-conscious, besides the obvious reduced carbon emissions, the diesel engines have an AdBlue tank fitted, which cuts down nitrogen oxide particulate emissions.

So that’s the basic hybrid van. Here’s how it would be customized to be a chiller or freezer:

Transit Custom Chillers

A chiller van is used to move perishable goods needing to be kept at medium temperature ranges, such as beverages, bread, cold meat, flowers, and certain pharmaceutical products, among others, usually over short distances. These goods need to be chilled, but not frozen, at a range of 0°C to 8°C to preserve their quality and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria.

To customize a Ford Transit Custom into a chiller van, customize your vehicle to meet the requirements of the Chill Specifications and you will get Direct Drive refrigeration unit installed (GAH RC300). is fitted, with at least 50mm insulation and Paneltex Somers chiller door mouldings. Insulation may include polystyrene foam or Styrofoam for example.

Transit Custom Freezers

For goods that need to be kept frozen and have the option to travel greater distances, a transit custom freezer van is required. These vans carry low-temperature goods such as ice-cream and frozen food at a range of -18°C to -25°C.

Depending on temperature needs, transit custom freezer vans will have varying insulation thicknesses up to 100mm, freezer units reaching varying temperatures up to -25°C and even reinforced, heat-resistant sides and doors. It may also include features that enable quick defrosting.

To customize a Ford Transit Custom into a freezer unit, get your vehicle customized in accordance with Freezer Specification where Direct Drive refrigeration unit would be fitted (GAH SRF350), along with a patented direct air system that boosts both miles per gallon and the fridge unit’s efficiency. At least 75mm insulation is added to the van; with thermal efficient composite construction; seamless, durable glass reinforced plastic lining; and Paneltex freezer-door mouldings.

Freezer vans can be adapted to have several loading compartments, with different temperature settings, enabling different goods to be transported simultaneously.

Improved insulation and having rear pod doors can add further energy efficiency to the freezer and chiller vans.

Make it your own

You can then also kit out your Transit Custom with any of the six trim options, including Leader, Trend, Limited, Trail, Active, and Sport.

For van owners who really want to stand out from the crowd or have added comfort for their drivers, their vans can be customised further with standalone extras (think interiors like carpeting, and more), or Swiss Vans’ upgrade styling packs, which include: WASP, WASP ICE, Hornet, or Super Hornet. These packs may include 18″ and 20″ alloys wheels in various styles, sidebars, front splitters, rear spoilers, sidebars, roof styling rails and even interior leather, depending on the pack you choose.
